HUDAK RECEIVES “FRIEND OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES” AWARD

Colorado Congress of Foreign Language Teachers, at its annual spring conference on February 14-15, awarded State Board of Education member Evie Hudak with its prestigious “Friend of Foreign Languages Award.”

Hudak was nominated for the award by Martie Semmer and Janine Erickson, co-chairs of the State World Language Advisory Council, with letters of support submitted by Dr. Barbara Medina, Director of English Language Acquisition at the Colorado Department of Education, and others from CCFLT and SWLAC.  Hudak was described as “a most deserving choice” for the award because of her understanding at “a deep level of the importance of P-20 foreign language education as part of the academic curriculum” and her seven years of “wise guidance through the channels at the Colorado Department of Education” in helping to update the new teacher standards for foreign language and supporting SWLAC’s efforts to update the student model content standards in foreign language.

The nominators and supporters commented on Hudak’s “interactive and enlightening presentations” and her “dedication, energy, and caring.”  They described her as an “insightful, farsighted, and sincere leader” for whom “education is truly a passion.”

Hudak said that she was “deeply honored to receive the award,” but said that she was “just doing my job as a member of the State Board of Education” in working with foreign language educators.

HUDAK RAISES CLOSE TO $24,000 FOR CAMPAIGN IN 2007

Momentum for Evie Hudak’s campaign for State Senate District 19 continued to grow in the 4th quarter of 2007, as the total amount raised by the campaign reached over $23,700 by the end of December.

The strong showing of support in the last few months of the year was particularly impressive, with people turning out for various campaign events in December, despite the snow and cold.  “People are excited about Evie’s candidacy,” said Julia Hicks, her campaign manager.  “It was obvious on that Saturday in December when people showed up to see her, knowing that afterwards they would be scraping snow off their windshields and driving home on snow-packed roads.”

“Everywhere I go,” said Hudak, “people have heard that I am running for the State Senate and come up to me saying how thrilled they are about it.”

Hudak has been endorsed by the incumbent, Senator Sue Windels, who is term-limited at the end of this year, as well as numerous other current and former officeholders, including Congressman Ed Perlmutter, President Pro-Tem of the State Senate Abel Tapia, House Majority Leader Alice Madden, and former Governor Romer.  Her endorsements also include the Colorado Health Care Association and a number of labor unions.

EVIE HUDAK REPORTS RAISING ALMOST $15,000

FOR STATE SENATE RACE

Evie Hudak’s campaign for State Senate District 19 continues to gain momentum as it was announced today that she raised $9,486 from 157 contributors during the 3rd Quarter, for a total of $14,874 raised as of September 30.  The campaign was kicked off in late May.  Her strong fundraising sends a clear message that she has the support to bring the same kind of leadership to the State Senate that she has shown on the State Board of Education.

“I am delighted that Evie is running,” said Rebecca McLeish, a contributor who lives in the district. “I can’t think of a better person to replace our [term-limited] State Senator Sue Windels.”

Hudak has been endorsed by many Colorado leaders, including Senator Sue Windels, Congressman Ed Perlmutter, House Majority Leader Alice Madden, Former Governor Roy Romer, Former State Treasurer and Lt. Governor Gail Schoettler, and numerous other state legislators, local officials, and district residents.

Over 70 percent of the contributions to Hudak’s campaign were $50 or less.  “I am touched and humbled to have so many people reach into their pockets and give what they can afford,” said Hudak.  “I promise to honor their faith in me by working on the issues that matter most to the people of Arvada and Westminster and helping to keep Colorado a great place to live.”

HUDAK NOMINATED FOR STATE SENATE

Evie Hudak, a dedicated and experienced Colorado leader, was unanimously nominated to be the Democratic candidate for State Senate District 19 at the Jefferson County Democratic Assembly this past Saturday, March 15.  She is running to replace term-limited Senator Sue Windels.  The district encompasses most of Arvada and the Jefferson County portion of Westminster.

Hudak, in accepting the nomination, said she is running for the position because she cares “about our future” and seeks “the best future for our children and grandchildren.” She described her compelling vision for Colorado:  a thriving 21st century with affordable health care, a clean and safe environment, a strong economy that supports businesses and working families, and an effective statewide education system “preschool through postsecondary.”  Hudak noted that her vision is “optimistic,” but she said, “It’s the right thing to do, and I know it is possible.  I have seen how much can be accomplished when people are willing to work hard, work together, stay focused, and make wise investments.”

Hudak has received honors and commendations from those familiar with her public service, honesty, and commitment to children, families, and a better statewide quality of life.  “Brilliant” was the description of Hudak given by Laurie Albright, a member of the Boulder Valley School Board, after hearing Hudak’s explanation of the state’s fiscal quagmire, presented to a group of parents in the district recently.  Paul Johnson, a life long Colorado resident and Denver Post guest columnist, stated that she is “the voice of courage and reason in a time of difficult choices.”  Barb D’Albey, Democratic chairwoman of the House District that Hudak lives in, commended Hudak’s “persistence, dedication to detail, expertise, insight, and enthusiasm.”

Evie Hudak Announces Candidacy for State Senate District 19

WESTMINSTER, CO --Evie Hudak, a current member of the State Board of Education, announced that she will be running for Senate District 19 in the 2008 election. “I am ready to utilize the critical thinking skills and deep understanding of public policy that I developed through my years of service on the State Board of Education in a broader scope of issues. I believe the State Senate is a natural extension of what I have been working on, and I look forward to helping Colorado improve its health care system, strengthen its public education system, and invigorate its economy,” Evie commented.

Sue Windels, the current Senator from Senate District 19 said, “Evie Hudak will hit the Senate floor running! Currently, as a member of the State Board of Education, she is already working closely with the legislature and the Governor. She knows the issues and she is definitely not hesitant when it comes to tackling the tough problems. Her experience, passion, boundless energy, and dedication to our community will give us one of the strongest, most effective voices in the State Senate.”

Evie’s experience on the State Board of Education, her background in teaching, and her continued presence in PTA have enabled her to ask the tough questions of educators, policy-makers, and research experts. She continually seeks input from various community groups attending numerous public forums and then taking a leadership role.  Hudak brings her expertise to the development of public policy and legislation enhanced by her involvement in organizations promoting early childhood education, children’s health and welfare, transportation improvements, civic involvement, and equal pay for women.

Today’s legislators need to be energetic, enthusiastic, and forward-thinking.  Evie brings this kind of critical thinking, attention to detail, and creative problem-solving to today’s statewide challenges. She will use her dynamic leadership to support families and their health care needs. Responsible economic and transportation development must be balanced with alternative energy production and higher education imperatives to enable Colorado to reach its full potential. Evie Hudak is the individual to bring about this reality.
