PARENT INVOLVEMENT

COPINE (Colorado Parent Involvement Network for Education) is an informal group of advocates who work to improve parent involvement in education. COPINE proposed the ideas in SB 09-90, the Parent Involvement in Education Act, which I sponsored.

SB 09-90 created the State Advisory Council for Parent Involvement in Education (SACPIE), which met on November 19 for the first time. Members of SACPIE were appointed by the State Board of Education, the Department of Higher Education, and the Department of Human Services. Its job is to advise various education entities in the state on effective strategies for parent involvement, in order to help improve student achievement, reduce the dropout rate, reduce achievement gaps, and improve college attendance and graduation.

SB 09-90 also expanded parent involvement in District Accountability Committees, School Accountability Committees, and other educational advisory committees in the state. These provisions were incorporated as part of SB 09-163, which I also sponsored. The Colorado Department of Education is revising its Accountability Handbook to include these provisions. They are required to take effect in the 2010-2011 school year.
