ELECTION RESULTS
I promised you in my last newsletter I would tell you how I think the election results will affect the State Legislature. See my article below for that. Every time an election is over, I think of the old saying “you win some and you lose some” - the election of 2010 was no different!

ELECTION!
Yes, folks, the 2010 election is almost over. In my next newsletter, I’ll tell you how the election results will affect the State Legislature. I’m sure you hear a lot on television about how the election will impact the Congress, but there is very little media coverage of our state races other than for Governor. You have to read local newspapers to find out the importance of the county elections and those for special districts like RTD. Every elected official makes decisions that affect all of us. Although I’m not up for re-election this year, I am...

TELL ME WHAT YOU ARE THINKING!
My next Town Hall Meeting on October 16 will be different:  Instead of having presenters talk to YOU, I'm asking YOU to talk to me and one another.  I'm calling it "Soapbox Derby," but the only race is you against the clock.  I will give every attendee 3 minutes to get up on a "soapbox" and tell us what you think about a person or issue that is on the ballot this fall.  Take this opportunity to get something "off your chest"!  Let's have some fun!  Expect some treats.
If you need a review of...

CAN YOU FEEL THOSE BALLOTS COMING?
If you signed up to be a mail-in voter, you should be receiving your ballot NEXT WEEK! If you live in Arvada, you will receive two separate ballots, the second one being for the fire district mill levy election, issue 5A. I hope you have already decided how to vote. My advice is for you to vote NO on all the numbered amendments (60, 61, 62, and 63) and propositions (101 and 102), vote YES on the lettered referenda (P, Q, and R), andvote YES on 5A. The numbered amendments and propositions got on the ballot by petition, which means they didn’t go through a process of...

ELECTION THOUGHTS
Are you thinking about the election in November? Well, do you realize that Election Day is very early that month, on November 2? More importantly, if you’re like the majority of people in Jefferson County who vote by mail, your ballot will arrive in mid-October. This means you have ONLY A FEW WEEKS to decide how you’re going to vote! You can learn about some of the very important issues that will be on the ballot by attending my Town Hall meeting on September 25.

SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER?
As you will read below, I will have several opportunities to see you and hear your concerns in September. I hope you will choose to take advantage of at least one of them. I will host my monthly Legislative Coffee on the 1st Thursday, as usual. My monthly town hall meeting is on September 25 (please note that this is not on the 3rd Saturday as usual, but on the 4th Saturday for this month only). I am adding one new special feature this month, office hours, where you can take the opportunity to visit the State Capitol and meet with me in my office.

BACK TO SCHOOL, NOT SESSION
It’s around this time of the year, when kids are going back to school, that people start wondering when the Legislature goes back into session. Not until January! The Legislature is in session only 5 months a year, from January to May. We can’t be in session right now, because the general election is in November. All 65 seats of the House of Representatives are up for election, and half of the Senate seats are too. Most of my colleagues are busy campaigning.

HALFWAY THROUGH SUMMER

Can you believe that summer is half over? I’m seeing it as my flower gardens fill out and my vegetable garden reaches the point where I can harvest plenty of zucchini, green beans, peppers, and lettuce. It also means that it is time for us to fill out our primary election ballot. Don’t forget that ballots must be received by the county clerk as of Tuesday, August 10. You can either mail the ballot with one first-class stamp, or in Senate District 19, drop it off at Arvada Motor Vehicle, 6510 Wadsworth Boulevard, or Westminster City Hall, 4800 West 92nd Avenue.

HOT SUMMER?

The temperatures have run hot and cold in June – I wish the economy would be more of the former and less of the latter! We passed a number of job-creation bills during the past legislative session (see the Voters’ Voice, page 2), and I’m hoping to see them make a big difference in Colorado as soon as they take effect this summer.
